The history of all styles of football is long. But with careful study, you can see the similarities that exist in them all, and sort of understand how these variations came to be. They originated from six different types of the game, which date way back. Some are believed to have evolved from military exercises in China, that in many ways resemble our modern day soccer.
It's believed by many that the difficulty in controlling a ball with the feet is what inspired the development of the game. Along with the tough physical aspects that made a good setting for stiff and high competition. It took a certain amount of talent in different areas of the game, and produced 'standouts', which now are called 'stars'.
An old military exercise manual has an element of what was then called the 'Tsu'Chu'. This was a type of exercise that involved the basic elements of kicking and controlling a ball with precision and skill, and this dated as far back as the third century before Christ. The ball for this exercise was filled with feathers and mixed with hair. The goal was to put the ball into a small opening in a net that was stretched between two canes made of bamboo. (Like Soccer).

Soccer doesn't allow you to touch the ball with the hands, but in our American style football of today, the hands are used extensively in advancing the ball. There is still the element of kicking in the punt, the field goal, and the kickoff, but the pass and run and laterall are all performed using the hands.
The rules for the game of football were first laid down in 1876 at a convention, where Walter Camp, who is now hailed as the father of American style football, put them into play. From there the game progressed in popularity sparking fierce rivalry and competition amongst athletic clubs and other organizations.
Our first professional player made a total of $500 for his efforts. His name was William (pudge) Heffelfinger. He played for the AAA, or the 'allegheny athletic association'.
