The big mystery in the martial arts is this concept of Chi. Chi is supposed to be a mystical energy that permeates the universe. And, chi is supposed to be a mystical energy that you can, after a lifetime, create to do mystical things.
Unfortunately, proof seems to be sadly lacking for these claims concerning Chi. Maybe there are a few people who can do things, but most people can't, and a few exceptions here and there don't prove the truth of certain theories concerning the subject of Chi. Fortunately, there is a theory that will result in Chi, that is not mystical, and that will work.
A motor is comprised of two poles between which is tension. Understanding this definition, everything in the universe can be considered a motor. Behind every tension in the universe you will find a motor.
An atom has an electron and a proton interacting to create energy. A cell has potassium and sodium interchanging to create energy. Everywhere in the universe that you find tension, you will find two terminals, and you will find a motor.
And, when you use the martial arts to create a stance, you have increased your weight, and this causes energy to move between the body and the planet. When the weight moves up and down the legs, when you shift the weight from leg to leg, from stance to stance, this excites the tan tien, a spot two inches below the navel which generates energy for the body. Thus, you have utilized the body as a motor, and there is energy, and you can call this energy chi.
Here's the problem: everybody concentrates on building the body, and so creates only the low level chi required to operate the body. What people should be doing is concentrating on the mental process, and by this I mean focusing awareness on the procedure. If you build the awareness it takes to create the energy, energy will build at a much higher rate, and will result in the 'superhuman' potential that people look to Chi for.
Thus, do your form, build awareness, and concentrate not on the building of muscles or frame, but on becoming aware of what you are doing. Feel your connection with the planet, feel the energy going down and up your legs, feel the energy building in the tan tien. Do this and you will soon become aware of a surprising and potent energy building within your body.
Energy that warms the palms upon mere thought, energy that tingles a body part just by thinking of it. Energy that can be channeled into body parts, and can even be felt outside your body. Once you have started building energy of this type, then you can start searching for more spectacular ways to manifest it.
