St. Petersburg Bowl Tickets

By David Griffith

The second annual St. Petersburg Bowl will kick off on December 19, 2009 and will likely feature teams from the Big East and the Conference USA conferences. After a successful debut in 2008, this year's bowl looks to again be an exciting event. The game is played at Tropicana Field, famously known as the home of the Tampa Bay Rays of Major League Baseball. If for some reason a team from either the Big East or C-USA conference can attend the bowl, a team from the Sun Belt conference will likely play.

This year's St. Petersburg Bowl will again be televised on ESPN, and is the second bowl game of the year, with the New Mexico Bowl kicking off only a few hours earlier. This bowl game is a hit with college football fans in the Tampa area, being close to home and usually featuring Big East teams. It's great for fans to experience and FBS bowl right in their backyard.

Tropicana Field will once again play host to the St. Petersburg Bowl, a venue that usually is home to the Tampa Bay Rays, and thus, requires some seating modifications to allow for a football game's rectangular gridiron. However, seating is good and adjustments are not obtrusive. With many cities aware that single-use parks are no longer considered a wise economic idea, if the city approves a new Rays stadium in the future, the game will likely move there.

ESPN owns several bowl games, including the St. Petersburg Bowl, which means they organize and promote the bowl game. Along with this bowl, ESPN owns the aforementioned New Mexico Bowl, the Armed Forces Bowl, The Maaco Las Vegas Bowl, the Hawaii Bowl and the PapaJohns.com Bowl. ESPN has taken on these bowl games and done well, which leads one to think they may continue to take on bowl games in the future.

Last year's inaugural St. Petersburg Bowl featured local South Florida against C-USA's Memphis Tigers in a rout, where USF quarterback Matt Grothe torched the Tigers for 236 yards and three touchdowns. Grothe walked away with a win and the Most Outstanding Player award as his Bull won 41-14.
