Great Teams Make Things Happen:
In most organisations, fantastic teams get more done than anything else. McGregor's X-Y Theory shows why empowering people get the best results - instead of using processes and tools it's more about changing attitude and behaviour towards employees.
Great teamwork is born from concentrating on the employees within that team rather than the task they are doing. By concentrating more on the employee and making sure that's right, more often than not the task will just happen.
One of the best resources a company can have is a team of people working for each other. You know when a team is great because they decide, as one team, that they are going to do something because they know that they can make a difference, and they make this decision not because they have been told to, but because they want to.
Team building:
There are many team building exercises that can be done, ranging from expensive team days out to inexpensive drinks after work. This article looks at using a quiz night as a team building exercise
Why a Quiz Night?
Here are some reasons why choosing to host a quiz night at your company would be of benefit.
It's cheap! For just a couple of quid you could buy a quiz pack online or if you had the time you could write your own for free. It might also make it more fun if there were some drinks available for the participants and some nibbles.
Secondly, it's flexible - you only need a couple of hours after work, either in the office canteen or down the local pub (if you go to the local pub you may also be able to see if you could get the landlord to donate a free drink to the winner on account of the extra trade you'd bring in!).
Most importantly though it will get people all pulling in the same direction - i.e. winning the quiz! They will need to reason with each other, give opinions, and with this will come talking and joking.
Quiz evenings could also be used in the wider company context and use it as an exercise to get to know people in the company you wouldn't usually work with. You might impose a rule to say that only 2 members of the same business function can be on the same quiz team and therefore forcing (in a nice way) people to meet and talk with each other.
Benefits:
This sort of fun evening makes the organisation a lot more transparent and friendly. Instead of people walking past each other and avoiding eye contact in the staff canteen they say hello and maybe have a chat or a joke.
The main end product here is that people get to know each other as people, rather than collegues. This is so important because once you start knowing people and liking them, it's almost second nature to want to help them, and it's when everyone in the business is striving to help each other out is when the business becomes great!
